European Initiative for Communicators of Science
A grant-supported program to improve communication between journalists and scientists, invites science journalists to apply to a week-long class at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Gottingen, Germany. Participants will get a taste of what it is like to work in a state-of-the-art molecular biology laboratory as well as participate in discussions that may range from the societal implications of genetic engineering to the challenges of writing for public readers. In addition, participants will also develop expert contacts for stories they may write and meet colleagues representing different media and countries. There will also be scheduled opportunities to enjoy Gottingen and the surrounding area. Following the "Hands-on Laboratory" (HoL) program, journalists may spend up to two additional weeks in "Extended Laboratory Assignments" at selected Max Planck Institute laboratories throughout Germany or other leading European and Israeli research institutions. All costs, including board and travel are borne by EICOS. Professional science journalists, including freelance writers, working for any print or electronic media can apply. While having a scientific background is not required, proficiency in English is necessary.
