When an editor from Routledge Press asked Lewis, who teaches “Genethics” at the Alden March Bioethics Institute of Albany Medical Center and is a genetic counselor with CareNet Medical Group in Schenectady, N.Y., to write the first science book for its “The Basics” series, she jumped at the chance. “After two decades-plus of writing textbooks, it was refreshing to cover the same topics in narrative style in a much shorter book,” she says. The six chapters that make up Human Genetics: The Basics provide an overview of the field of human genetics, starting with “From Ancestry to Destiny,” through “From Mendel’s Peas to Double Helices,” to “Genetic and Genomic Technologies.” Although she is still writes textbooks (three are currently in progress), Lewis is very happy to have transitioned to other forms of nonfiction writing including a novel.
