AAAS Meeting
NASW 2003 Denver
Dear NASW Member,
The NASW Board and Workshop Committee are pleased to invite you to NASW 2003 Denver.
This year, we are featuring a Weather and Climate Field Trip on Wednesday, February 12th, 2003. A full day of workshops follows on Thursday, February 13th. Thursday begins with a continental breakfast, followed by our plenary session "Are We Missing the Real Climate Change Story?"
Following the plenary, a series of breakout panel sessions feature a special science theme to take advantage of the world class weather and climate resources in Colorado, as well as sessions on science writing for freelances, staffers, and public information officers, with both "pro" and "rookie" tracks.
As always, panelists include scientists, reporters, authors, and public information officers from the nation's top research institutions and media. The Thursday workshops also feature our popular network luncheon, with dozens of topic tables for discussions and networking with colleagues.
This year's workshops are held in the same site as AAAS. Register for discounted lodging and check out the AAAS program.
We suggest you make plans now to join us in Denver in February. We expect you'll find the field trip and workshops full of opportunity both for professional development and for socializing with colleagues.
As always, we'll be seeking ideas and volunteers to help plan the following year's workshops. Please look for the workshop survey form to provide feedback, suggestions, and to offer your assistance in organizing panels for NASW 2004 Seattle.
Meanwhile, we'd like to thank our speakers, panel organizers, NASW Executive Director Diane McGurgan, NASW Workshop Committee Co-Chairs Deborah Blum and Laura van Dam, and committee members John Cox, Tinsley Davis, Carol Ezzell, Joel Greenberg, Sibylle Hechtel, Bob Henson, Robert Lee Hotz, Paul Raeburn, Krishna Ramanujan, Jim Scott, and Lee Siegel. A special thanks to Ed Leonardo of AAAS.
We are also grateful for assistance from Lucy Warner and Zhenya Gallon of NCAR, and Barbara McGehan of NOAA, web/database assistant Darcie Gurley, Ben Sherman of Sea Grant Media Relations, our student volunteers, and many others who make the workshops possible.

Elias Adam Zerhouni, M.D.
NIH Director Speaks to NASW on "Medical Discovery in the 21st Century"
National Institutes of Health Director Elias Adam Zerhouni, M.D., will speak at NASW 2003 DENVER. Dr. Zerhouni will give a presentation about what he's done since taking over the directorship in May, 2002, and his vision for the NIH and medical research in the future. As NASW President-Elect Deborah Blum puts it, "this is an exciting opportunity for members to talk with the new NIH director in a relatively exclusive fashion. Lots of people may have questions that they wouldn't get to ask him directly otherwise."
More information on Dr. Zerhouni.
Moderator: Boyce Rensberger, Director of the MIT Knight Science Journalism program, former Science Editor of the Washington Post
All members attending the workshops are welcome to attend this special NIH Director session in lieu of the other 11 a.m. breakout panel sessions. No change in prior registration is necessary. Please note that one of the panel sessions (Plagiarism: When It Happens to You) has been canceled to accommodate this session.
