Join us at ScienceWriters™ 2008 for a program you shouldn’t miss. This meeting, a confluence of the National Association of Science Writers Annual Workshops and the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing’s New Horizons in Science Briefings®, is organized solely by science writers, with the interests of science writers in mind.
We have planned a dozen career-enhancing professional workshops, followed by three days of scientific sessions, including visits to laboratories and research sites at Stanford University. We finish with a bonus day of field trips, where you can explore winemaking in the wooded hills above Santa Cruz, visit one of NASA’s premier laboratories, or spend a day in Monterey, visiting research labs and the world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Why do I have to pay for one part of the meeting but not the other?
The NASW portion of ScienceWriters is solely funded by NASW. While a registration fee is charged to offset some of NASW’s costs, that fee covers only a portion of the total NASW annual meeting costs. New Horizons is hosted each year by different universities, which provide funds to cover the meeting.
How is content chosen?
The professional development workshops for the NASW annual meeting are chosen by a committee of members from proposals submitted by members in March of each year. The scientific sessions for New Horizons in Science are chosen solely by program director Paul Raeburn. The program draws speakers from around the country, including some from the host institution.
Who can attend?
Registration for the NASW annual workshops portion of ScienceWriters is open to members and a limited number of non-members. Registration for the New Horizons portion of the meeting is open to NASW members and non-members interested in science writing.
How do I register for ScienceWriters 2008?
All registration is funneled through Registration Assistant.
ScienceWriters 2008 will be held at the Cabana Hotel in Palo Alto, Calif., with special room rates of $159 per night plus tax. See the Travel and Accommodations link above for booking details.
Registration for the NASW workshops is $150 before Sept. 1 and $175 after, until registration closes on October 6. Students who are current NASW members may register for $75.
Registration for New Horizons is free to NASW members or members of the press.
Registration for the awards dinner is $50, and field trips will range from $20-45.
Three types of travel fellowships are available:
NASW Freelance Travel Fellowship
Eligibility: Open to NASW members who are freelance writers
Description: Provides up to $900 to cover the costs of attending ScienceWriters 2008. These fellowships are supported by the Authors Coalition of America funds. Note: Before receiving reimbursement, fellows must submit a short report of one or more aspects of the workshops, suitable for publication on the NASW Web site and potentially in ScienceWriters. Assignments will be made prior to the meeting and must be filed within 48 hours after the assigned session. More information will be available after grants are awarded.

NASW Graduate Travel Fellowship
Eligibility: Open to current NASW student members enrolled in a science writing program
Description: Provides up to $900 to cover the costs of attending ScienceWriters 2008. These fellowships are supported by the Authors Coalition of America funds. CASW Traveling Fellowship
Eligibility: The fellowships are intended primarily for journalists from publications and broadcast outlets that do not routinely cover major science meetings or employ a full-time science writer.
Description: The fellowships offer up to $1,200 to cover the costs of attending ScienceWriters 2008.
To apply: Submit three collated sets containing each of the following: 1) a brief (no more than 500-word) expression of interest; 2) a resume (with home and office telephone numbers); 3) no more than 3 clips or broadcast transcripts (on any topic); 4) a nominating letter from a senior editor, news director or producer.
