This is an updated, expanded, and newly illustrated version of a book Young published in 1965, several years before becoming a science writer. Written for ages 5 to 9, Old Abe is the true story of an eagle that spent three years with a Union regiment fighting in the states bordering the southern Mississippi River, including at the Siege of Vicksburg, and his activities after the war. The book is getting good early reviews on the Internet, particularly from librarian bloggers one of whom said she “was caught up in this ‘biography,’ fascinated by the facts, and intrigued by this novel mascot.” Website for the book is http://www.OldAbeEagleHero.com.
