National Association of Science Writers

The National Association of Science Writers was founded on September 14, 1934, with a charter membership of 12. Its purpose, as set forth in its constitution, is to "foster the dissemination of accurate information regarding science through all media normally devoted to informing the public."

As of 1996, NASW had about 960 active and lifetime members. These include writers and editors of science in newspaper, magazine, television, radio, book, and freelance fields. There are about 845 associate and affiliate members covering a broad scope of interests and vocations, such as part-time writers; educators, editors, and writers for specialized publications; and science communicators for colleges, universities, medical societies, voluntary agencies, foundations, government, business, and industry.

The NASW holds annual business meetings in conjunction with the national meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Also, many areas have established local affiliates that periodically host seminars and social events. Contact the national NASW office for information on these chapters.
