  • Science in Society Award entries open

    These awards, which are not subsidized by any commercial or professional interest, honor and encourage outstanding investigative and interpretive reporting about the sciences and their impact on society. Award winners from each category receive a cash prize of $2,500 and are invited to attend a dinner and presentation in their honor during the annual ScienceWriters meeting, held this year Nov. 5-9 in New Haven, CT.

  • Times's Denise Grady wins Victor Cohn Prize

    Denise Grady, a New York Times science reporter, has been selected to receive the 2009 Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting in recognition of the unusual breadth and depth of her coverage of a wide range of health issues, both domestic and international.

  • Science in Society Journalism Award winners

    The winners of the 2009 Science in Society Journalism Awards, sponsored by the National Association of Science Writers, are: Alison Bass for her book Side Effects: A Prosecutor, a Whistleblower, and a Bestselling Antidepressant on Trial (Algonquin Books); Jason Felch and Maura Dolan for their Los Angeles Times series "Genes as Evidence"; Michael J. Berens and Ken Armstrong for their Seattle Times series "Culture of Resistance"; and Pamela Ronald for her commentary "The New Organic," which appeared on boston.com, the web site of the Boston Globe.

  • Career Development Grants awarded

    We are pleased to announce the recipients of NASW's first Career Development Grants, developed to support education, training or other activities that help established science writers continue or advance their careers in today's rapidly changing media environment. The grant offers reimbursement of up to $2,500 for proposed activities. The program is supported by funds that NASW receives as part of the Authors Coalition of America, which distributes royalties on US copyrights collected overseas. Fifty-one applicants submitted requests totaling over $84,000.

  • Award deadline approaching

    The deadline for entries in NASW's Science in Society Journalism Awards is fast approaching. All entries must be postmarked by Feb. 1, 2009.

  • McGurgan award goes to Richard Robinson

    Congratulations to Richard Robinson, this year's winner of the Diane McGurgan Service Award. Richard, currently chair of NASW's actively engaged freelance committee, embodies the enthusiasm and spirit of the McGurgan Award. A member since 1996, Richard has contributed steadfastly to the listservs, shepherded the development of the Words' Worth compensation database, and has lobbied tirelessly on behalf of his fellow freelancers.

  • Joe Palca wins 2008 Victor Cohn prize

    Joe Palca, science correspondent for National Public Radio, has been named to receive the 2008 Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting for his outstanding, insightful coverage of a wide range of medical topics.

  • Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting travel grants awarded

    We are pleased to announce the four NASW members selected to receive travel funding from the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. Recipients will attend the 58th Meeting of Nobel Laureates June 29-July 4 in Germany. Together the recipients represent a range of backgrounds, media, and publications. Congratulations to Vicki Brower, Freelance Science Writer; Chelsea Martinez, Freelance Science Writer and Graduate Student; Michael Moyer, Articles Editor, Popular Science magazine; Christina Reed, Freelance Science Writer; and thank you to all who applied for this opportunity.   • Fellowships awarded to reporters in developing regions

  • Geeta Anand wins 2007 Victor Cohn Prize

    Geeta Anand, a New York-based senior special writer for the Wall Street Journal's investigative group, has been awarded the 2007 Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting for a powerful series of exhaustively reported stories displaying extraordinary narrative technique, emotional power, and sharp, intelligent analysis.
