  • A fond farewell

As had been announced, Diane McGurgan leaves NASW in June, after 30 years of dedicated service. At a luncheon at the ScienceWriters 2008 meeting, a couple hundred attendees gathered to honor her. The sunny patio of the Crowne Plaza hotel, in Palo Alto, was filled with longtime friends and new members, alike in their appreciation of Diane's monumental contributions to our organization. Inside the hotel, friends viewed a slideshow and wrote fond wishes in an overflowing scrapbook.

  • Don't get stuck with a late fee: Renew by Jan. 31

NASW dues for 2009 must be paid or postmarked by Jan. 31, 2009, to avoid a $20 late fee. To renew, log into the NASW members web page and select "Renew membership." You can pay by credit card or print a form to mail with a check. Can't remember if you've paid? The "Renew membership" link will tell you. If you don't have a username and password, or have forgotten them, you can get them here. But don't wait until the last minute — it can take up to a full day to process your request. Thank you for renewing.

  • NASW polls are open

It's election time for science writers, too. The polls are open for the 2008 NASW officer and board elections. To increase member participation and save paper, ballots are all online this year. Look for your email invitation and unique voting URL in your inbox and cast your vote by Monday, December 1. Read candidate bios here.

We are pleased to welcome Cathy Dold on board as the new editor of the NASW freelance pages. Cathy is a freelance writer and editor from Boulder. • Time to update your directory listing

We've received a lot of returned mail lately, and it's once again roster printing season, so it's time to double check and enter updates of your info in NASW's online database.

  • Dues and surveys are due soon

The deadline for receipt of dues and the Authors Coalition survey is January 31. If you need your new membership card in a hurry (say, for a certain meeting in mid-February), please keep in mind that renewals can take up to 3 weeks to process, so pay early. Incomplete renewals are processed last. So, don't forget to include your payment (it happens!), and remember to send in the form even if you paid via PayPal.

Invoices for 2008 Dues have been mailed. Please note that all dues must be received by January 31, 2008. Dues are now remitted to NASW's Associate Director, Tinsley Davis, at a different address, so please read the mailing carefully.
