Arthur Fisher, 77, science and technology editor of Popular Science magazine for nearly three decades died on Tuesday, July 22 after a long illness. He was a longtime member of the board of CASW and a National Association of Science Writing member for 40 years. (Obituary.)

CASW Programs Upcoming Deadlines!

New Horizons in Science^® Conference

The 46th annual meeting of New Horizons in Science will be held Oct. 24-28, 2008 at Stanford University, in Palo Alto, California. New Horizons will meet in conjunction with the National Association of Science Writers' ScienceWriters 2008 workshops, as part of Science Writers 2008. Registration begins August 1.

New Horizons Fellowships

CASW offers Traveling Fellowships, of up to $1,200 each, to cover the costs of attending the New Horizons in Science briefing . The fellowships are intended primarily for U.S. journalists from publications and broadcast outlets that do not routinely cover major science meetings or employ a full-time science writer. CASW also assigns a veteran science writer to each fellow to serve as mentor and to help ease his/her way through the program. The application deadline is Aug. 15.

Taylor/Blakeslee University Fellowships

CASW awards fellowships of $2,000 to students enrolled in U.S. graduate-level science writing programs to help defray the cost of tuition. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. The deadline for applying is July 1, 2008. Application

The Victor Cohn Prize
for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting

The deadline for nominations for the Cohn Prize is July 31, 2008. The honoree receives an award of $3,000, a certificate, and travel expenses to attend the award ceremony at the annual banquet of the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing and the National Association of Science Writers.
