A native of Gainesville, Florida, I graduated from Furman University (Greenville, SC) in 1996 with degrees in chemistry
and German. After college, a Fulbright Fellowship brought me to Gieβen, Germany, for a fantastic year that allowed
me to do chemistry research and exercise my language skills. I then moved on to
Bloomington, Indiana, and Ph.D. work in the Indiana
University Department of Chemistry. My thesis work focused on the interactions
of proteins and lipids, blending elements of cell biology, biochemistry,
organic chemistry and polymer chemistry.
While finishing my Ph.D., I
took a graduate level science journalism course at the IU School of Journalism
with Holly Stocking and decided that I wanted to trade my world of beakers and
Bunsen burners for science writing. In 2004, I worked as an intern at Discover
magazine and as an AAAS Mass Media Fellow at WNBC-TV in New York. Since then, I have been
freelancing from the NYC area, doing a combination of writing, editorial work
and content development for science exhibits.
I am a member of the National Association of Science
Writers, the American
Society of Journalists and Authors, the Society of Environmental Journalists, the American
Association for the Advancement of Science and serve on the board of the Science Writers in New York (SWINY).
