In addition to journalistic
science writing, I have also been involved in science museum and exhibit work.
Museum Work
I first became involved in
informal science education while I was a graduate student at Indiana University. During that time, I volunteered
and later worked on the staff at WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology
in Bloomington in 2003 and early 2004. While on
staff, I served as a floor manager, the staff member in charge in the public
gallery. I did science demonstrations, worked with community volunteers and
facilitated a positive experience for visitors. While there, I also
helped with the development of future chemistry demonstrations.
Exhibit Work
From May 2005 through
February 2006, I developed content for the new permanent astronomy exhibits at Griffith
Observatory in Los Angeles with the design firm C&G
Partners in New York. In addition to doing research and
acquiring images for the exhibits, I served as the research coordinator for the
project. Within that role, I facilitated the flow of information among researchers,
designers and the client and built relationships with outside scientists. The
exhibits opened in November 2006 and received a 2007 juror's award
from the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD).
