This content analysis investigates thirteen concepts in 20 newspaper commentaries about the 2002 summit of North Korea and Japan. English newspapers were from Japan, South Korea, China, Russia, the United States, Britain, India, and Australia.

Independent variables include geographical location, political distance, editorial or by-lined opinion, and publication before or after the summit. Quantitative analysis measured the most frequent concepts as "allies," "military threat," "economy" "name-calling," and "sentimental appeal." Qualitative analysis was based on summit names, regional place names, and quotes.

We found political distance and geographical distance affects the content and tone of the commentaries.
