Why the chiropractors sued Simon Singh

When the science writer said the British Chiropractic Association "happily promotes bogus treatments," the group had to react, its newsletter says (PDF). "For years, chiropractic had been castigated in a succession of critical articles, but here was a published article which had explicitly named a chiropractic association and had made defamatory comments about it," its president writes. Singh's co-author Edzard Ernst responds in the Guardian.

RE: Why the chiropractors sued Simon Singh

Chiropractic is formulated upon an outdated and very mundane notion of subluxation and the innate intelligence concept. If Chiropractic is to be taken seriously as an actual healing art, the members need to purge the profession of the foot detox promoters, electrodermal screening snake oil sales folk, and vaccination detractors. Weed out the cervical manipulators that claim it will cure earaches, especially in children. Stick to what works, spinal manipulation. Through EBP it has been demonstrated to help with low back pain that is crippling our nations work force.

Unless some changes are made very soon [it may be too late already] the Chiropractic profession is going to be decimated by the Doctors of Physical Therapy [DPT] and the Naturopaths [ND]; both of which are allowed to manipulate. Osteopaths [DO] have been manipulating for years; although it fell out of favor, it may make a comeback with the profession. Prior to the Internet, most patients could not find information concerning Chiropractic; now it is instantly available to the vast majority of consumers, and those consumers are getting tech savy and starting to question the whole Chirpractic concept. The answers are not coming back in a positive light. Many Chiropractors are in it for a fast buck and promote entirely too much pseudo-science.

Look to schools like the National University in Illinois for the future of your profession, that being Naturopathy [ND]. Chiropractic college enrollment is so low that many schools are closing or cutting back student services. If you cannot prescibe an antibiotic, you are not a physician, period. Mixers know this and the straights are in denial. That being stated, National University needs to remove Homeopathy and Oriental Medicine from its curriculum and initiate the study of emergency medicine into each trimester. After four years [10 trimesters of EM] the ND’s will be competent ED physicians in addition to Naturopths. This alone will begin to fill the void in rural medicine, if we repay their tuition for five years service. That simple substitution will have students begging to get in to study Naturopathy and catapult the ND to DO and MD status in a few short years!
