There is much interest among the ranks of the NASW and other writers groups for protecting both novice and veteran science writers from being exploited by media conglomerates who pay pennies or nothing for professional online reporting, and also insist upon owning the intellectual "content" forever.

This group is open to all NASW members who work as journalists and writers, but, initially, not to public relations professionals. The latter are excluded simply because the agenda of paid PR folks does not always coincide with the interests of journalists and writers who are not hired to promote special interests.

It is hoped that we can brainstorm about how to use collective action to protect individuals. Perhaps a manifesto that lays out the acceptable conditions of work for hire. And it is important to get some publications to agree to abide by the conditions.

Once we do some brainstorming here, we could form a google group discussion and open it up beyond the NASW.
