June 17 2020 – Vol. 2, No. 6

Congratulations to our Diversity Summer Fellows

MK Manoylov, Ariana Remmel, and Evelyn Valdez-Ward have been selected for 2020 NASW Diversity Summer Fellowships. Each will receive $5,000 as well as a one-year membership to NASW.

MEET THE FELLOWS
NASW stands in solidarity with the Black community. Our commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion applies to every aspect of NASW and extends to the broader field of science writing. Read and share the Board’s June 2 statement.

How to get writing … in short bursts

Three writers recently shared tips on adopting a routine, finding efficiencies, and using timely breaks to write with focus and speed and meet the deadlines that the stream of COVID-19 news requires. Read their insights and spend 30 minutes watching a recording of this event, which was co-sponsored by NASW and the National Press Club Journalism Institute.

In the era of COVID-19, Alexandra Witze, NASW treasurer, shares this update on the status of NASW’s finances. The short version is that NASW is currently in stable financial shape. With conservative planning, we have put a priority on maintaining and, in some cases, expanding the programs, services, and support offered to members.

The promise and pitfalls of preprints

Preprints have become many scientists’ number one tool for releasing new findings about COVID-19 to their peers and the public. A June 2 #SciWriLive discussion explored the unique challenges that poses for science communicators and reporters. A recording of the session is now available.
