Guest Editor proposals due July 15

The National Association of Science Writers is currently accepting grant proposals for a new, rotating, Guest Editor to develop features for our ScienceWriters web site (www.NASW.org).

Under the guidance of the Web Editor, the Guest Editor will develop a web or social media project of his or her choice during a three-month period. The $1,500 grant* is intended to provide interested parties with an outlet for developing interests specific to certain elements of science writing while harnessing the talents and creativity of motivated members and contributors. The trial run of the Guest Editor program, currently underway, is producing a fellowships database, set to debut on the ScienceWriters web site this summer, and we are ready to expand the program.

What might a project do? A Guest Editor could contribute a fresh voice to our Twitter feed and Facebook page, currently run by the Web Editor, or add a specific resource or resources to the Public Information Officer section of the website. The guest editor could use the grant funds to curate existing content, commission written work from outside experts, or curate a series of discussions or question-and-answer sessions, similar to Reddit’s AMA series with science and non-science writers.

But really, we’re looking for your ideas and hoping you’ll have proposals that will make all that sound silly.

Use the subject line “Guest Editor,” and send it to director@nasw.org by July 15, 2012. Successful applicants will be notified in late August.

*50% of the proposed funds will be distributed at the outset of the project. The remainder will be distributed upon completion of the project and submission of applicable receipts and applicant invoice. Applicant's time for project curation and management may be billed at $25/hour.
