NASW student programs at AAAS 2017

The National Association of Science Writers (NASW) will again sponsor several exciting programs for student journalists during the AAAS meeting, being held next in Boston. To participate, students must become members of NASW by Jan. 27, 2017. NASW members get free AAAS Newsroom registration, which is now open.

Undergraduate Travel Fellowships: Apply online for an NASW travel fellowship to attend AAAS 2017 in Boston. The application deadline is Dec. 15, 2016. NASW Travel fellowships will cover between $500 and $1,000 for up to 10 undergraduate students to attend the meeting. Travel fellows will report on a session of their choice, and their work will be published on the NASW website. Candidates who are selected as fellows must become student members of NASW by Jan. 27. Graduate students are ineligible for this travel fellowship.

Mentoring Program: NASW will sponsor its popular mentoring program during AAAS, pairing undergraduate and graduate students with senior journalists and public information officers interested in similar beats. To be eligible, participants must become student members of NASW by Jan 27. Students who would like to have a mentor may apply here. Science writers who would like to volunteer as a mentor should sign up here.

Internship Fair: Students are invited to interview with editors from top magazines, research institutes, national labs, and other science communication outlets during a speed-dating-style internship fair on Saturday, Feb. 18. Past recruiters include Science, Nature, Science News, Scientific American, Chemical & Engineering News, Reuters Health and Fermilab, which also recruits for CERN near Geneva, Switzerland. All participants must report to the fair venue at 1 p.m. sharp. Unfortunately, if you arrive later we will be unable to accommodate you. To participate in the fair, students must join NASW by Jan. 27. Learn more about the internship fair here.

See you in February!
