The frost is on the pumpkin; time for NASW's 2006 Science in Society Meeting, Oct. 27 and 28. Over 400 people have signed up to attend. We can't wait to see you in Baltimore! Also: Two additions to the NASW web site.

Last-minute conference news:

The cost is $15 each (that's a 25 percent discount!). Please bring cash as we cannot accept credit cards. Exact change is appreciated.

-- You may still sign up for the CASW New Horizons in Science Briefings, Oct. 28-31, space permitting, by contacting Diane McGurgan (diane@nasw.org or 304.754.5077). For a full listing of the program, check out www.casw.org.

Two new additions to the NASW website:

  1. Details about health, dental, vision and long-term care insurance available to NASW members are in the "All About Freelancing" section. An NASW member username and password is required. Read more under "Resources" on the main NASW home page or go to: http://www.nasw.org/resource/freelancing/archives/000433.htm#more.

  2. A reformatted copy of NASW's popular guide for public information officers, "Communicating Science News." The public learns about science news by many different routes, including newspapers, magazines, books, radio, television, the Internet, electronic news services and films. This guide for scientists, physicians and PIOs is intended to help them understand the needs, strengths, and weaknesses of each form of media. Read it in the PIOs section under "Resources" on the main NASW home page, or go to http://www.nasw.org/resource/pios/csn.

For more information, contact NASW secretary Nancy Shute at nshute@nasw.org.
