ROBERT KUNZIG NETS EUROPEAN BOOK PRIZENASW member Robert Kunzig netted the 2001 Aventis Prize for Science Books for Mapping the Deep. Kunzig, based in Dijon, France, as the European Editor for Discover magazine, was awarded £10,000 (around $15,000) for the best science book written for the general reader. Mapping the Deep "makes elegant sense of an ocean of science," reports New Scientist. The magazine noted that Kunzig's inspiration for the book was a microscopic look at a drop of seawater, and the realization that "of the thousands of plankton visible, fewer than half were known or named." The Aventis prizes, formerly known as the Rhne-Poulenc Prizes for Science Books, are awarded annually for the best general and the best junior-level (age 14 and under) science books published during the previous calendar year. Previous winners include Brian Greene, Paul Hoffman, Jared Diamond, and Steven Jay Gould. http://www.booktrust.org.uk/prizes/aventis.htm #(Source: news release) |
