WSJ's Jerry Bishop Cited for Excellence in Medical Writing


Jerry E. Bishop, who has been covering medical research for the Wall Street Journal since 1958 and deputy news editor since 1987, received the Friends of the National Library of Medicine's fourth Medical Media Award of Excellence at the Friends Annual Patrons Dinner in Washington, D.C. on September 25. The award honors outstanding reporting to the public of biomedical and health information in print media, radio, or television.

Dr. Lois DeBakey, professor of scientific communication, Baylor College of Medicine, chaired the selection committee. Other members included Dr. Lawrence Altman, medical editor, The New York Times; Victor Cohn, former science and medicine editor, The Washington Post; Dr. C. Rollins Hanlon, executive consultant, American College of Surgeons; Dr. Timothy Johnson, medical editor, ABC News; Dr. Robert Joynt, professor of neurology, University of Rochester Medical Center; Dr. Jerome P. Kassirer, editor-in-chief, New England Journal of Medicine; Dr. George Lundberg, editor-in-chief, The Journal of the American Medical Association; Dr. Robert Moser, former executive vice president, American College of Physicians; and Dr. Kenneth Shine, president, Institute of Medicine/National Academy of Sciences.
