Garrett Receives Major CDCP Award

Laurie Garrett, medical writer for Newsday and immediate past president of the National Association of Science Writers, has been presented with the 18th annual Champions of Prevention Award by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She is the only journalist to have received the award and the only non-physician excepting President Jimmy Carter. Garrett’s book, The Coming Plague, called for greater national attention to deficiencies in public-health preparedness for emergent epidemics.
