Area Code Change

Please note there is a new area code for the NASW. It is 631. The phone and fax numbers remain the same. This change is effective immediately.

Dues

The deadline for membership renewal has passed. If you received an overdue notice, please send your check immediately or you will be dropped from membership and lose access to NASW online services.

Membership Roster

The 2000 membership roster is being updated and will soon go to press. If you're a member in good standing, send with address, phone, or other contact information updates, to diane@nasw.org ASAP. You also need to act fast if you haven't paid your dues for 2000. If work on the directory is still underway when your check arrives, you'll get it. But there are no guarantees.

New Insurance Benefits

Freelance writers in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, California, Massachusetts, the greater Chicago area, Northern Indiana, greater Atlanta, and parts of Central and Southern Florida are eligible to participate in group insurance plans through TEIGIT (the Entertainment Industry Group Insurance Trust) which administers Cigna Insurance in those states. Additional Insurance Plans

NASW members now have additional benefit plan choices through CWO (Council of Writers Organization). These include a number of group and individual insurance plans, liability and business insurance, as well as reduced long-distance rates. For more information visit the CWO Web site.

Awards Deadlines

By now you should have received a brochure on this year's NASW Science-in-Society Awards. Please note that the addition of new award categories for radio, Web publication, and books. To be eligible, broadcast/publication must have taken place between June 1, 1999 and May 31, 2000. Books are eligible if published during calendar year 1999. Deadline for all entries is July 1, 2000.

Victor Cohn Award Deadline

The deadline for the first Victor Cohn Victor Medical Science Writing Award is July 31, 2000. The award is sponsored by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing.

Board Election

The deadline is October 1 to submit names for candidacy in the next NASW board election. If interested, contact Richard Harris (rharris@npr.org) ASAP. If you miss the deadline, you can run by submitting a petition endorsed by the signatures of 20 members. Ballots will be mailed October 20.
