EDUCATION COMMITTEE LAUNCHES WEB SITE ON MENTORING

NASW's popular Mentoring Program is going online! The Education Committee will launch a new Online Mentoring Project. The site, designed by Steve Rutledge at Ohio University, offers a host of new features for NASW members. Access through the NASW home page (nasw.org) in mid-April. Here's a peek at what you'll find when you visit:

Online Writing Critiques

If you've ever wondered how to improve your writing but didn't have a professional to ask, this is the program for you. Each month, NASW student members and members new to the science beat will be invited to submit articles for a writing critique. Education committee members will select three stories a month from the submissions and each will be critiqued by one of a panel of veteran science writers. The original article will be posted (with the writer's name stripped), along with the critique, for everyone's benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a degree in science to be a good science writer? What kind of internships are available for science writers? How can I get started as a freelancer? These and other questions are answered here.

Ask a Mentor

If you've got a question that the FAQ doesn't answer, send it to Ask a Mentor. A panel of veteran NASW members stand ready (well, between deadlines) to help.

The site will also feature information on the onsite Mentoring Program and the Internship Fair, both offered at the annual AAAS meeting.

Keep an eye on the NASW homepage for more details on the online mentoring project, and let us know what you think. Send comments to Kelli Whitlock and Mariette DiChristina at mentor@nasw.org.
