PRESIDENT'S LETTER

by Paul Raeburn

I'd like to start by congratulating Brian Lavendel, our workshop coordinator, on the wonderful work he did setting up the NASW programs in Boston in February. These were our most successful workshops yet. I'd also like to thank the many people in Boston who made the workshops possible, including Boyce
Rensberger, Elizabeth Thomson, and many others at MIT who arranged for rooms for the panel and lunch at the MIT Faculty Club, no less. The workshops would not have been possible, of course, without the fine work done by many of our members, who volunteered to organize the panels and workshops.

I'd also like to thank the many hosts and sponsors who helped make the Boston visit memorable. They include MIT, the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, the Knight Science Journalism Fellowships, the Charles Stark Draper laboratories, Biogen, Boston University, Harvard Medical School, Technology
Review, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, and the Boston Museum of Science.

Boston University hosted a delightful reception at which we presented the NASW Science-in-Society awards. Thanks for Carol Morton and Beryl Benderly for overseeing the awards committee, and to the many others who served as judges for the various awards. Thanks to Richard Saltus, Seema Kumar, Carol Halim, who put together an outstanding party for NASW members on Sunday night during AAAS.

And thanks to Nan Broadbent and AAAS for their awards reception on Friday night, and the karaoke party on Saturday night. For those of you who weren't
there, if word of the singing abilities of our members hasn't reached you-so much the better. It's safe to assume that most of them will be keeping their day jobs.

The next issue of ScienceWriters will contain biographies of candidates for the NASW board and officer slots. If you're interested in running for the board, please send me an e-mail by May 1. I will refer the names of those who are interested to the nominating committee, which will select the candidates.

It was nice to see so many of you in Boston. I hope we run into each other again soon.
