The Knight Science Journalism Fellowship program will offer for the first time an intensive, one-week course in cell and molecular biology. The course, "Genes & Cells," will take place Dec. 5 - 10, 1999, at MIT, and will be taught by leading experts from MIT, the Whitehead Institute, and Harvard.
Fellowships are available for 12 journalists who will attend the session along with this year's Knight Fellows. Funding will cover travel to MIT (up to $500), lodging, and most meals. There is no stipend beyond these expenses.
This "minifellowship" is open to journalists from any country who have at least five years of full-time experience as a writer, editor or producer, including those who have no background in science but who want to become familiar with this field. Under terms of the funding from the Knight Foundation, preference will be given to staffers from large news organizations.
The application deadline is Sept. 1; fellows will be notified Oct. 1. Details about the program, including a preliminary course schedule, are available at http://web.mit.edu/ knight-science/.
Program Director Boyce Rensberger said he hopes to produce
two such short courses each year on a variety of specialized fields.
