SCRIPPS HOWARD GRANT FUNDS SCIENCE STUDY FOR 25 JOURNALISTS

The California Institute of Technology and the Foundation for American Communications have launched a national initiative to improve the quality of news reporting on science and technology. Funded by a three-year, $300,000 grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation, the new Jack R. Howard Science Institute for Journalists will provide reporters with an opportunity to improve their understanding of science through an interactive program of teaching, experimentation, writing exercises, and visits to local laboratories. The new learning center is named for Jack R. Howard, the late, former president of the E.W. Scripps Company. The first week-long science reporting institute will take place on the Caltech campus in June 1999. The institute is open to 25 journalists nominated by their news organizations. Freelance writers may also apply. Visit http://www.facsnet.org/ or http://www.caltech.edu/~media/home.html for more information.
