Interest-free, open-ended "loans" are available, through The Authors League Fund, to professional writers who are facing financial emergencies brought on by medical bills, rent, and other living expenses. Repayment of funds is voluntary.
An application may be made by the writer or a friend or relative. The applicant must have a record of professional publications and show evidence of need. Confidentiality is guaranteed.
Funding for the loans comes primarily from members of The Authors League; the parent organization of The Authors Guild and The Dramatists Guild. The Authors League was founded in 1917.
To apply for a loan or for further information, contact The Authors League Fund, 330 West 42 Street, New York, NY 10036-6902, phone 212-268-1208, fax 212-564-8363.
NASW freelance Lucy Kavaler was recently been elected to the board of directors of The Authors League Fund and encourages members to contact her if they have questions about this resource. Reach her at LEKavaler@cs.com.
