DAVID BARON WINS $2,500 ASM AWARD; PENNISI ALSO CITED


David H. Baron, now reporting on the environment in the Washington, DC, bureau of National Public Radio, was named winner of the first American Society for Microbiology Public Communications Award. The $2,500 award will be given annually "to recognize outstanding achievement in increasing public awareness, knowledge, and understanding of microbiology." Baron was cited for his report, "Microbial Diversity," produced for NPR's environmental show, Living on Earth. Elizabeth Pennisi, now at Science Magazine, was named runner-up for an article in New Scientist magazine, "The Secret Language of Bacteria."
