FROM THE ADMINISTRATIVE SECRETARY

About Those Missing Members

By now members should have received the 1996 roster of members. Blake Powers did a wonderful job arranging it and putting it all together. Larry Krumenaker helped with categories and tightening up databases. I apologize wholeheartedly to the few paid-up members who were inadvertently left out. A number of others, however, were left out because they had not paid their annual dues by May 10. From now on, if your dues are not in by April 1 you will not be included in the succeeding roster. An overdue notice will go out March 1 if necessary, but please don't wait for the second or third dues notice.

Also, to ensure that the directory is both up to date and accurate, please inform me about address changes, titles, and phone/fax numbers etc., as they occur. Waiting until you can add the changes to the December 15 dues notice means that they all come in at once, at the same time as the dues, and that is the enemy of accuracy.

Running for Office

If you wish to run for the NASW Board, a petition with 20 signatures must be in my hands by October 1 so that ballots can be mailed out October 20.

1997 NASW Meeting at AAAS

Remember: The NASW Meeting at the 1997 AAAS meeting is in Seattle next February. Anyone with suggestions for workshops or other activities should contact Paul Lowenberg, chairperson of the host committee at 206-543-2580. The program is firming up.

New Horizons In Science

The annual New Horizons in Science Briefing will take place in Baltimore October 27-31, 1996, at the Tremont Plaza Hotel. The Johns Hopkins University is the sponsor. The four-day briefing will bring together world-renowned scientists and many of the nation's leading science reporters to examine new developments in a variety of scientific fields If you have not yet received a notice directly from the CASW, or if you have any questions, call Diane McGurgan at 516-757-5664.

Fellowships to New Horizons

CASW is also offering traveling fellowships of up to $1,000 each to cover the cost of attending its sessions. The fellowships are intended primarily for newspapers, magazines, other publications and TV and radio stations that do not have a full-time science writer. Transportation, hotel and meal costs are covered. Winners of the fellowships will also receive a free, one-year subscription to ScienceWriters. CASW will also assign, upon request, a veteran science writer to serve as a mentor.

If you are interested, submit four copies of: 1) a brief (500 words or less) letter of interest; 2) a resume with home and office numbers; 3) no more than 3 clips or broadcast transcripts on any topic; and 4) a nominating letter from a senior editor, news director or producer.

The deadline for submitting applications is Sept. 16, 1996. For more information, call Diane McGurgan at 516-757-5664. Send submissions to CASW New Horizons Fellowships, P.O. Box 404, Greenlawn, N.Y. 11740. Fellowships are funded by the Burroughs Welcome Fund.

Electronic Rights

Since NASW has joined the struggle to protect freelance writers from the arbitrary assumption of electronic rights by publishers, it seems only right to warn future contributors to ScienceWriters that articles appearing in this publication will also appear one time only in its subsequent electronic edition. Copyright, however, will remain with the original author.
