THREE JOURNALISTS HONORED FOR NEWS ABOUT ENGINEERING

Writers from Fortune and the San Francisco Chronicle took top honors in the 1995 Engineering Journalism Awards. Gene Bylinsky of Fortune was given a $5,000 prize for "The Digital Factory," reporting how the application of soft manufacturing techniques has revived American manufacturing.

Rick DelVecchio and David Dietz of the Chronicle also received $5,000 for articles examining the structural problems which caused, or could cause, the collapse of homes during earthquakes.

Judges for the contest were former NASW president Jon Van, of the Chicago Tribune; Carlos Byars of the Houston Chronicle; and Nicholas Chopey of McGraw-Hill's Chemical Engineering.

In 1996, three $5,000 awards will be offered for stories furthering public understanding of engineering that appear in daily newspapers, other general circulation print media, and broadcast radio or television.
