NASW Annual Meetings
NASW held its first annual workshops at the AAAS meeting in Atlanta in February 1995. The workshops sold out and each session was filled with standing-room only crowds. Over the years, the workshops grew in number and in scope, attracting as many as 500 participants each year.
In 2005, NASW launched a new format for its workshops under a new name: The Science in Society Program, held in conjunction with CASW New Horizons in Science, offered more sessions on the craft of science writing, as well as workshops designed to help members hone their skills in science communications, network with other members, and learn about new trends in the field. NASW members offer workshop ideas and organize individual sessions, recruiting some of the best journalists and public information officers in the business.
Today, the NASW and CASW meetings are organized under the ScienceWriters banner, combining skills-sharpening workshops with briefings on the latest scientific research. Other highlights of the annual meeting include the NASW business meeting, open to all members; tours of local sites of interest to science writers; and the annual Science in Society Awards Reception.
You can see individual session reports from the 2009 meeting. Also, coverage by Indiana University science writing students and individual session reports from the 2008 meeting, plus reports from the 2007 and 2006 meetings.
