NASW Update, July 12, 2006

Annual meeting plans, entry deadline for the Victor Cohn prize, grievance committee news and new listserv archives.

Although it seems like beach season has just started, NASW volunteers are already well into planning our 2006 annual meeting, which will be right before Halloween. Will there really be a prize for the best Henrietta Lacks (HeLa) costume? Here's the latest news on the workshop and other NASW activities. Questions? Contact NASW secretary Nancy Shute, nshute@nasw.org.

Save the date! NASW's 2006 workshop and meeting will be held Oct. 27-28, 2006, at the Tremont Grand meeting facility and the Tremont Plaza Hotel, in downtown Baltimore. It will be followed by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing's New Horizons in Science briefing, Oct. 29-31. More specifics coming soon on the workshop schedule, social events, and reservations.

Medical mavens take note: just two more weeks to enter the Victor Cohn Prize competition. You have until July 31 to enter the 7th annual competition for the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing's award for excellence in medical science reporting, named after legendary Washington Post reporter Vic Cohn. The honoree will receive $3,000 and a certificate, to be presented on Oct. 29, 2006 at the New Horizons in Science briefing in Baltimore. Nominees should submit up to five examples of work published or broadcast since Jaunuary 2001. For more information, check out www.casw.org.

NASW's new Grievance Committee has been busy. So far this year, the group helped one NASW member collect payment for a story she did for a medical news site, and discussed strategy with four other members. One of them had a story sitting in limbo for many months at a science magazine, with no paycheck in sight and no word from the editor. Another was several months late in being paid by a trade-book publisher. The third had a publisher reject an article when she declined to sign an indemnification clause. The fourth had been waiting for more than six months for a check from a ghostwriting client. The Grievance Committee is available to discuss strategy to help members resolve problems with publishers, and to go to bat for writers who have taken enough steps on their own to resolve a grievance. For more information, contact Dan Ferber, Grievance Committee chair, at ferber@nasw.org.

Work is continuing on the NASW web site redesign. With the public site revamp complete, our attention has shifted to the members-only side. You can expect to see our new and/or redesigned features unveiled as they become ready in coming months. We've already unveiled an improved archive of the NASW-Talk, NASW-PR and NASW-Freelance lists. See (NASW member password required). -- Russ Clemings, NASW cybrarian.
