Details, fees, and qualifications

Applicants for regular membership are required to submit five samples of work (content should be science) produced for a non-expert audience in the past five years. Clips must include the publication or airing dates for each entry.

Our bylaws, written many years ago, require applicants present the names of two current members who will endorse their application. In the best of cases, this requirement prompts new applicants to reach out and meet members of our welcoming community, sometimes creating extended connections. In many cases, however, finding sponsors can be a barrier or take time one might not have, and we don’t want that to stop anyone from applying! To help out, we’ve autofilled the names of two board members on the application itself. Kendall Powell and Alexandra Witze have agreed to assist with application review as needed. If you would like to name other members, please just type over their names. We look forward to welcoming you.

Student memberships are also available for those who are currently enrolled in journalism or science programs, or who are serving as reporters or editors at school newspapers. Student membership may be renewed year to year as long as the student remains enrolled in a degree-granting program. Upon completion, graduation, or if the student is no longer actively enrolled, student members must apply to become regular members. Students may retain student status during a short (6 months or fewer) transition period, i.e. between undergraduate and graduate programs. Once a student has become a regular member, the member cannot return to student status in the event of further matriculation.

Membership is based on the calendar year. Memberships are not pro-rated and expire Dec. 31, no matter the date of joining, except that memberships starting Nov. 1 or later expire on Dec. 31 of the following year.

Lapsed members may renew at anytime within two years after the last renewal. After two years of non-renewal, a member must re-apply.

Fees for new memberships (Regular memberships include discount off renewal rates):

  • New U.S. regular member: $55 Special introductory rate starting August 2020
  • New Canada regular member: $55 Special introductory rate starting August 2020
  • New international regular member: $60 Special introductory rate starting August 2020
  • New student member: $20 Special introductory rate starting May 2020
  • New international student: $20 Special introductory rate starting May 2020

NASW memberships are based on an individual credentials. Since each individual must qualify for membership on his or her own professional qualifications, we do not offer institutional memberships. Under no circumstances are memberships transferable from one individual to another.
