Get involved: Run for the NASW Board

Every two years, in even years, NASW members elect the Board of Directors. This fall, members will be electing one new board member to fill a mid-term vacancy. The term runs from October 28, 2017-October 2018.

To self-nominate for this mid-term vacancy, email nominate@nasw.org with a statement of interest (500 word max.) no later than Monday, September 18. This candidate statement will tell members about you. It should incorporate your reasons for volunteering, relevant experience, and biographical info. A photo suitable for placing with candidate statement online is welcomed, but optional.

The election will be held at the annual membership meeting in San Francisco on Saturday, October 28. Members not in attendance will be able to cast proxy ballots online ahead of time. The newly elected board member will be asked to stay and participate in the annual board meeting on Monday, October 30.

Board Member Responsibilities

Details on the responsibilities of board members are below and also in NASW's Bylaws The National Association of Science Writers (a 501c6 organization incorporated in the state of New York) runs on volunteer power, and board members are expected to be active and engaged. Board members, as the governing body of the organization, can plan to spend about two hours per week engaged in discussions, leading projects, etc. Officers will spend more time. Potential candidates should discuss the time needed with their employer if necessary.

Each board member is expected to contribute to discussions of, and be familiar with, NASW business and actively participate in at least one NASW committee. Elected board members participate in board listserv discussions and quarterly conference calls. They also must attend the annual meeting. For the upcoming term, the ScienceWriters meeting dates are:
