NASW Executive Director joins advisory council for Power Shift Project media workplace integrity initiative

The nonprofit organization Freedom Forum has invited National Association of Science Writers executive director Tinsley Davis to serve on the Trainers Council of its Power Shift Project. Tinsley joins 15 other media industry leaders from print, radio, and television, as well as journalism schools and associations.

Launched in 2018, the Power Shift Project is a journalism industry initiative seeking to improve the diversity, equity, and culture of news organizations. Its “Workplace Integrity: Train the Trainers” curriculum guides media leaders in engaging and addressing harassment, discrimination, incivility, and other legacy challenges within their organizational culture. All 16 members of the newly selected Power Shift Trainers Council have undergone the Workplace Integrity curriculum and are now charged with advising the program and supporting this growing network of trainers and trainees.

The appointment continues a history of collaboration between NASW and the Power Shift Project, reaching back to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tinsley and then-NASW president Siri Carpenter were among the invited panelists for the Power Shift Project webinar “COVID19: Taking Care of Journalists and Journalism" in April 2020. Jill Geisler, head of the Power Shift Project, also met with NASW members for a special virtual Q&A titled “Supporting Your Teams and Taking Care of Yourself During COVID19: Advice for Editors and Managers” in May 2020.

NASW members in organizations large and small are encouraged to check out the Power Shift Project's upcoming free trainings. The next Workplace Integrity workshop is May 3-4, and applications are due on April 27. Members can also take part in upcoming Do You Qualify as an Ally webinars. The next one is scheduled for June 8, and archived recordings are available online.
