Hear from leading experts and policymakers like Nobel laureate Jack Szostak on the origin of life in the RNA world, former head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Kelvin Droegemeier on the future of U.S. science, and Director of Brown University’s Pandemic Center Jennifer Nuzzo with a dash of hope about pandemic preparedness.
Engage in professional development sessions to improve your craft, including discussions on using AI responsibly, crisis management as institutional communicators, and the state of science under the Trump administration. Online sessions topics include spotting questionable research practices, how to launch and run worker-owned media outlets, and making viral videos.
Meet and mingle with fellow science writers at the many networking events, including the ever-popular SciWri mentoring session, offered online and in-person, and a dedicated meetup for caregivers of all kinds.

We are especially excited to bring the community together in 2025 amidst ever-shifting landscapes in professional and personal realms and after the sudden withdrawal of our previous hosts in February. We are enormously grateful to our generous foundation supporters that are making it possible to convene ScienceWriters2025 in Chicago and to all those who reached out to help with 2025 and beyond.
We are still in need of financial support for the myriad elements that support the excellent programming already in place. For instance, coffee service keeps everyone close by for impromptu interactions during session breaks versus scattering for the nearest Starbucks. We hope that you will share the call for sponsors below with those who wish to get involved or consider making a donation to the NASW Community Fund to support travel grants.
Can’t wait to see you,
The SciWri25 Steering Committee

Travel
We have secured reasonably priced hotel rooms in a convenient location that we hope will be easily accessed from all corners of the country. Reserve your hotel room at the Marriott Chicago O’Hare as soon as possible; space is limited. There is a free shuttle from the airport and easy public transport to downtown on Chicago’s “L,” available from the accessible Cumberland Station next door to the hotel.
We know the rapidly changing nature of public health threats along with the current political climate in the U.S. may affect attendee travel plans. We are tracking developments that may affect people’s ability to attend the meeting in Chicago and will share any updates via sciencewriters2025.org.

Held annually, the ScienceWriters conferences provide a gathering place for professionals and students working across the science news and communications landscape. From journalists to institutional science writers, from editors to producers, from seasoned science communicators to those just starting their careers, the events provide opportunities for every attendee, be it skills development, professional networking or discussions on pressing scientific topics. #SciWri25 continues this tradition with craft and career workshops organized by NASW members and New Horizons in Science briefings curated by CASW.
