Virtual Business Chat: Writing Wikipedia Profiles

The NASW Freelance Committee virtual meetup for March will be a business chat on how to write Wikipedia profile pages. To speak on the topic, volunteer hosts Jennifer Huber and Ellen Kuwana have invited Wikipedia volunteer editor Mary Brau. Mary will share guidelines and tips for writing a Wikipedia bio. In particular, she'll walk us through her written handout (see link below) on how to navigate Wikipedia's sophisticated set of policies and procedures that "can feel like drinking from a firehose for new WP writers and editors."
This meetup will launch a NASW project of writing Wikipedia profiles for participating NASW authors, particularly those from under-represented groups. The project is a collaborative effort of the NASW Freelance Committee and the NASW Advance Copy column — which is working toward establishing as the NASW Books Committee. Anyone interested in participating in the Wikipedia project or joining the new NASW Books Committee should contact Lynne Lamberg at LLamberg@gmail.com.

Speaker Provided Bio: "Mary Brau has been a member of the Wikipedia Project Oregon, a collective of volunteer editors interested in Oregon topics, since 2013. She has also led regular tutorial sessions on how to create Wiki editor accounts, the anatomy of a Wiki page, and how to edit one. She particularly strives to change how women are represented in Wikipedia. Before retiring, she taught remedial math and expository writing at Lane Community College and Pellissippi State Community College, as well as writing and study skills at the University of Oregon."
